    Howdy do

Not a whole hell of a lot going on here.  Colin's got 4 teeth and is crawling around like a little madman.  Eliot's adding new words to his vocabulary every day, more voiced than signed as of late.  Both of them had their check up at the doc, and they're doing great.  Colin's got a little strabismus (cross-eye) so we'll be seeing a pediatric opthamologist for that soon.  Eliot's height is off the charts, he's easily taller than most 3-yr-olds.  Colin's a little chubberkins, ranking up mighty high in weight.  Overall, they're both doing great.

Me, I'm feeling better than I have in a long time, like years.  I think I have had mild depression since before Eliot was born, and it got worse with the pregnancy with Colin.  I am feeling more myself than I have in years.  Even though I'm still always tired, always having back pain, always running running running, I'm predominantly in a decent mood.  This is a major change.  I'm paying attention to my appearance again instead of just hiding behind baggy clothes.  Wearing makeup, doing my hair, etc.  It feels good.

Learning how to resize and alter clothing lately.  I've got a ton of old clothes that don't fit well and I'm planning on altering soon.  When?  Eh, who knows, whenever I can get to it, ha!  Also still enjoying embroidery, working on 2 projects there when I have the time.

    Erm, I think that's about it... :-\

  • Another quick & lazy update

Things are still doing OK.  Colin cut 3 teeth in one week and Eliot's cutting a molar, so things have gotten pretty hairy around here but apparently I can handle it.  It's been rough though.  My mom's planning on coming up to visit and help out this weekend, which is good because I really desperately need a break.  I've started doing embroidery/needlepoint again (haven't done that in nearly 10 years) because it's easy to start and stop and I can tote my little sewing basket around the house easily.  If I tried doing that w/ my knitting, I'd be constantly dropping stitches, which is such a pain in the ass.  So it's a good little change in fiber work for me.  'Course, I don't do cutsie stitchery, but I'm sure you knew that already.  No teddy bears here.  Right now I'm working on quotes and sayings that just make me giggle, like "Babies suck."  Ha!

Eliot's vocab is improving daily and he's starting to put words together into short sentences.  Still not voicing much, but more than before so I think he'll be just fine.  Yesterday we had rice cakes with snack, and he called them "popcorn cookies" which was too cute.  The way he signs is adorable in my opinion, the first time he signs a new word he's all shy about it, and then when he knows he's got it down there's just no stopping him.   He also has signed "change diaper" and "change me" which are technically short sentences (verb/object) so he's right on track in that dept.

Colin's doing fine now that his teeth have given him a break.  He's rockin' and rollin' all over the floor now, and nothing makes him happier than just letting him roll around and play.  Makes it a bit easier for me, which is a welcome break.

Speak o' the devil, I hear Colin now.  kthxbai!

  • Another real conversation at our house...

Eliot and I were eating lunch at the kitchen table, and from the window you can see the road.  There was a city truck parked on the road, and I pointed to it and asked Eliot, "See the truck?  What do you think the truck is doing?"

    Eliot signed, "Waiting."

    I voiced/signed, "Waiting for what?"

Eliot voiced "Daddy" and signed "work."

He thought the truck was waiting for Daddy to get home from work.

American Sign Language The Easy Way

    Better late than never, right?

I never did get around to thanking my awesome bro and sis in laws for the cool giftmas presents.  THANK YOU Matt & Racheal!  I love them!  I'm a total butt for forgetting to say anything.
One of those gifts was a sign language book, which I try to read at least once a day.  I'm trying to get through a lesson a week, but that doesn't always work out.  But it's really easy to understand and works much better than rote memorization.  And Eliot's ASL is improving -- I would have to say about half his language is voiced and the other half signed.  That is considered normal for his age in a bilingual household (and I can't believe we're actually considered bilingual now, but it's true).  I'm not only proud of him, but of myself.  It's not easy -- I'm basically learning and teaching a new language while raising two kids under two.  I'm not sure how I'm doing that, but I am!

And here's a couple obligatory pix:

And thank you to my mom in law, who made us some awesome fleece blankets (Eliot's wrapped in one in the pic above).  Now that it's gotten really cold down here, we use them every day.

  • Poophole! (real conversations at our house)

Me, changing Eliot's very poopy diaper: "Omigawd Boo, don't stick your fingers there!"

Jon, in other room: "What is he doing?"

Me: "He's sticking his fingers in his butt."

Jon:  "Eliot, get your fingers out of your poophole."

Eliot:  "Poophole!"  (actually, it sounded more like "poo-po" but the message came across just fine)

Now Eliot will randomly call out "Poophole!" whenever he pleases.

    ...

Jon and Eliot getting ready for a quick co-shower before a trip out now consists of two males swinging their nuts at me, both of them laughing maniacally.  Usually the smaller of the two falls down at some point during this escapade.

Later, Jon in the shower with Eliot, singing: "Scrub the poophole, scrub the peen!"

    ...

And my mother wonders why I call them monkeys.
